8th March 2013 - International Women's Day

Sister Jayanti, the European Director of the Brahma Kumaris, with over 40 years of experience of Raja Yoga meditation and its practical application in daily life has been working for peace management and conflict resolution in the international community in order to establish a healthy society for all.

She believes that empowerment can only come through the realization of the real self, of being a soul, in this human body. Any form of external empowerment reaps only temporary fruit and that too is specific to a group of people.

However, internal empowerment gives us a sense of dignity that none other can refute. While sharing her ideas with the listeners of Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM, she added, a spiritual revolution is vital for empowering the millions because empowerment is not a fight for status of equality but a realization of self that automatically commands respect from others.

While commenting that the patriarchal system oppressed women for about 2500 years she also seemed to agree that passionate efforts are necessary for gaining what has been lost, but she reaffirmed that these are only external. An inner innate belief in every lady that ‘half the sky is held up by men’ is essential to realize the dream of women empowerment. Women have to recognize that their glory as “Shiv-Shaktis” is universally acknowledged and only when they connect to God Shiva, the genesis of power can take place in the soul that will trigger empowerment’’, she said.

In 1937, a remarkable step towards realizing this idea of women empowerment was taken by Prajapita Brahma, who set up the Brahma Kumaris Ishvariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, where women lead as spiritual teachers, but both women and men work in harmonious cooperation and coordination with each other for common good of the society.

Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM is a community radio station of the same organization, under the ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India, working with a goal of overall development of the local community in Abu Road, Sirohi, Rajasthan.

She also added “If I were not spiritually awakened, I would have been sad at the state of women in the world today. I would have been a feminist, fighting for rights of women. But, spirituality helps me to understand that it is not a matter of struggle, but only realization of the self. Therefore I encourage every woman to be strong and confident. After all, only freedom form inner bondage can bring freedom from societal bondage. Spiritual awakening leaves no scope for non-violence, whatsoever”.
